SIZE AND CHARACTER OF HAMILTON
The City of Hamilton is a port city on the western tip of Lake Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment, a huge, forested ridge known locally as “the mountain” and dotted with conservation areas and waterfalls, divides the city. The long-distance Bruce Trail runs along the escarpment. With a population of about 536,917, it is the third largest city in Ontario. Hamilton is 93 km southwest of Toronto, about an hours drive from downtown and a forty minute drive to Niagara Falls and the U.S. border. Lovingly known as the city of waterfalls, Hamilton boasts over 100 waterfalls – so chasing waterfalls across the city is a must-do any day of the summer.
SCHOOLS
As with the other cities in the province, Hamilton offers a wide choice of secondary and post-secondary study options and excellent opportunities for study and to live and work after graduation. Home to McMaster university, a public research university, known for its medical school. Its most renowned programs include health sciences. Founded in 1967, Mohawk college of Applied Arts and Technology is among the top colleges in Canada for applied research.
CULTURE
With a strong cultural development profile, FirstOntario Concert Hall (formerly Hamilton Place) is Hamilton’s performing arts centre offering year-round concerts, dance performances and live theatre. There are over 300 festivals and events held outdoors annually on the City of Hamilton property. The wide range of events include festivals like Supercrawl and Festival of Friends which each attracted over 200,000 people, as well as many smaller neighbourhood events. Over 90% of these events are offered free of charge. From its historical and social background, there is no shortage of interesting and entertaining attractions in the City of Hamilton.
